Claustrophobia – Furor Sanguinis – TWBG Forum – There Will Be Games

For some reason there seems to be no marketing/press buzz for this game and information is hard to come by. This came in the mail yesterday and I read the rules, wanted to offer some first impression information for those curious.

The Kartikeya mini is impressive, up to the standard of previous releases.

The new tiles are pretty slick. One works specifically with the new Kartikeya scenarios, one is a large pit tile that allows 5 warriors per side and has you rolling a die for each Warrior every single turn to see if they suffer a wound, the last tile is a flourescent mushroom room that caps a Warriors defense at 3 (thematically it’s very bright so you can’t hide in the shadows). All of these rooms are interesting and I’m excited to give them a shot.

The rules are laid out well, like always, around 3-4 pages for the Kartikeya. I really enjoyed the flavor text at the opening, pretty interesting.

The Kartikeya is a beast. He has his own Instinct phase which replaces the initiatve or threat phase, depending on the scenario (if there’s no Humans in the game it replaces the Initiative phase, etc.). You roll a pool of nice green dice and assign them in a similar fashion as the Condemned and Demon board. It looks like it will flow naturally and fit right into the system.

Overall his board is more similar to the Demon players but it is quite unique. You have powers like the Demon board but they’re segregated into areas that match one of the Kartikeya’s body parts (Head, arms, body, legs). Each area has a circle like the Demon board with its own requirement (1 Die, 1 Odd Die, 9, Two Dice, etc.).

The powers correspond to the body parts in a logical and thematic fashion, arms boost combat, legs boost speed, etc. You can make the Kartikeya frenzied (watch out), and he can even regenerate.

When he takes damage he applies it to a body part location. On his board there are small spaces to place the wound tokens. When a body part is full it is no longer useable. You cannot regenerate a body part that is lost. You have to destroy every body part to defeat the Kartikeya.

His combat can get crazy high. His Combat/Defense stats depend on the value of the die you assign to his arms. The lower the die the heavier Defense and less Combat. You can assign extra dice to this effect though, with each extra die adding one additional combat die.

When he attacks he can also split up his attack dice pool between multiple targets. He can attack before, after, or during movement. Quite flexible and very deadly. It’s going to feel like ferocious beast terrorizing Demons/Condemned and slaugthering multiple waves. Very impressive.

The book has five included scenarios which are varied and interesting similar to the De Profundis creative scenarios. No scenario is specifically spelled out for three players, however, you could easily play the third scenario, Cooperation, as a three player scenario. The Condemned and the Kartikeya are on the same side, taking on the Demons. In this scenario the Kartikeya activates first, then the Condemned, then the Demon player.

Also, surprisingly enough there’s a scenario where the Kartikeya gets two Condemned Blades for Hire as Slaves. They have set stats and can’t venture more than a tile away without their chains breaking and losing them. Very interesting and reminds me of Michonne from Walking Dead.

Another interesting element is that in these new scenarios the Demon player may not draw Event cards anymore. Instead that space on the Demon board is changed to generate a new kind of threat. This new threat can be spent to trigger unique events/effects that are different for each scenario. So in Scenario 1, the Demon player could do something like spend 2 of these new threat (can’t recall the name sorry) to give the Kartikeya -1 movement and 1 wound.

Overall, this expansion looks phenomenal. I wasn’t quite sure how they would fit a Dinosaur/Crocodile into the game but it feels seamless and natural. Not at all wonky or forced.

I will be writing a review with further thoughts, likely in a couple weeks.
